Heating Oil Theft

Heating oil was stolen from a domestic oil tank in Aller over the Christmas period. Avon and Somerset Police recently gave the following advice;
At this time of year people are re filling their oil tanks ready for the winter, and unfortunately this means that there can be more instances of heating oil theft. These crimes can be very expensive for a homeowner, but there are some simple security measures that people can put in place to deter criminals and protect their fuel. These include regularly checking your oil levels, fitting an appropriate security device and consider screening your tank from open view or laying gravel around the tank to act as a deterrent. We would also ask that people be vigilant, if you see any people or vehicles that are acting suspiciously that you take a note of the details and contact the police.

Thefts from Farms & Outbuildings

In recent weeks there have been a number of thefts from farms and outbuildings within Aller Parish.
Police crime prevention advice for preventing theft from farms and outbuildings
Around your farm yard, in your barns and outbuildings there is valuable equipment that will appeal to thieves - e.g. power tools, quad bikes, machinery and diesel. Isolated buildings,
machinery and livestock present the greatest risk.
Farm Buildings
• Make sure valuable equipment is stored in a secure building behind a strong locked door, or use a
metal cage and keep it locked when unattended.
• When not in use, lock doors to outbuildings at all times. If equipment is in a barn or rick yard secure
it with gates, an alarm or security beams.
• Use locks that comply with the British Standards, good quality locking bars and high security padlocks.
• Windows can be an open invitation to thieves - protect them with metal bars or grilles.
• Improve security for your diesel & fertiliser (see fact sheets on Fuel Theft and Security of Fertilisers).
Farmhouses
Farmhouses are often in isolated locations and can be vulnerable to crime if not properly secured.
• Make sure that doors are kept locked - even when you are on the premises.
• Fit locks to all ground floor windows.
• Make sure doors and windows are well maintained and in a good state of repair.
• Fit mortice deadlocks that comply with the British Standards to all external doors and reinforce with
locking bolts.
• Investing in timers that turn lights on and off inside the house if you go out at night and consider
installing security lighting outside.
• Consider fitting an alarm.

Roadworks Update Tues 10 October

The A372 remains closed to traffic but residents have access subject to delays around the work site due to machinery. Once the current phase of work on Kerbing is completed, hopefully by early next week, the A372 closure will be lifted but Church Path will be closed as work commences. Roadworks Update: 2 October

From Tuesday 3 October Ridley Hill will be blocked but Aller residents will have access to/from the village at the Langport end of High Street.

Once the current work is completed it will be necessary to carry out improvements to the drains that take water from the new system. This work will be done without the need for further road closures.

Recycling & Refuse Collection

Some recycling was not collected from High Street on Tuesday. District Councillor Gerard Tucker is working with Somerset Waste Partnership to ensure next weeks' collection is made. Current advice is to have refuse/redycyling out on the usual day but before 7am, for collection before the roadworks start for the day.

Tuesday, 12 September 2017

Roadworks day 2

From today there is a 24 hour closure at the Langport end of the village it will not be possible to squeeze through the gap as some people did yesterday.

There was an incident last night when a Fire appliance was delayed at the closure due to a communications issue between Somerset County Highways and the Emergency Services. The Fire Brigade routinely attend from both sides of the village and will amend their response for the duration of the works.

The issues of access, communication and the lack of a means to resolve issues as they arise have been raised with Somerset County Council and will be taken up by our County Councillor, Clare Arparcio-Paul.

Please be aware that the team doing the work are contractors and they are not responsible for decisions about closures, signs and the like. There have been several reports of them being helpful to residents with access issues and doing their best to help. Please treat the workers on site with respect.

Roadworks Day 1

There are clearly some issues with access and parking for residents as the roadworks get underway. We are in touch with Somerset Highways to try to find solutions. Please be patient, more information will be posted when it is avialable.

Refuse / Recycling will continue as normal but collections may be made at 7am so be sure that your bins and boxes are out in plenty of time.

High St. Closure Update 6 September

The Closure of the A372 High St. will be from Monday 11 September.

The work will commence with removing the road surface where the drains are to be installed. There will be trenches along and across High Street. This work has to be done first because the material used for past road surfaces cannot be re-used and must be taken to a specialist facility before deeper trenches can be dug for the new drains.

Due to the trenches along and across the road it is not possible to have a partial closure with traffic lights.

For most residents and visitors access will be from the direction of Othery.

The drain installation work will commence at the Langport end of the Village and progress towards the Old Pound. This means that for some people access will be from a different direction as work progresses.

Residents will have access to their properties but those closest to the site of excavations may have delays. Parking on High Street will be restricted.

Residents needing access and those who have no off road parking should speak to the contractors on site who will advise on safe access and where to park. It is important to note that this may change as work progresses.

Access for emergency vehicles will be facilitated at all times. Those with special medical needs or special access requirements such as deliveries, removals or events should contact the contractors on site to make any necessary arrangements.

Further information will be made available when possible.

Royal Mail have confirmed deliveries will continue as normal during the closure.

Enquires about School Transport should be made to transport@somerset.gov.uk / 0300 123 2224

Enquiries about the works before they commence or that cannot be resolved on site should be addressed to Somerset Highways on 0300 123 2224 / countyroads-southsom@somerset.gov.uk

Tuesday, 22 August 2017

Roadworks on High Street Aller (A372) for 40 days from 11 September.

The work is to improve drainage along High Street and will involve complete road closure throughout the period of works. At any time only a short stretch of road will be closed and arrangements will be made for residents access, but there will be no through busses. Alternative school transport will be arranged. High Street residents and local businesses will receive a letter from SCC Highways with more information prior to the start of works and students will be informed about transport arrangements. Diversions will be implemented and signed. More information to follow as it becomes available.
